We offer a comprehensive range of advice and information on education issues. Our information is based on current education law and guidance and covers state funded education for children aged 5-16 years in England only.
We are a team of advisory teachers offering a service which focuses on supporting pupils who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or pupils whose difficulties could be attributed to social communication difficulties but who do not have a diagnosis.
The key purpose of our service is to enable staff to cater for the needs of pupils on the autism spectrum so that they are able to access the curriculum and cope with the social demands of educational environments. We offer different levels of intervention.
- Autism awareness training including general strategies to help pupils with ASC.
- More bespoke training can be organised request.
General practical strategies are outlined during training sessions. These strategies help enable schools and their staff to cater for the needs of many children on the Autism Spectrum. The implementation of the specified strategies aim to help a large number of children on the spectrum.
Additional support may be requested for children with more complex difficulties. Where the child continues to have difficulties in accessing the curriculum or in coping with the social demands of school despite these interventions, and where these difficulties are attributable to ASC, the school may request additional help from the service.
Consultation visits to school can be requested on receipt of an IEP showing the pupil's response to strategies in place together with a signed, completed referral form.

The purpose of my service is to protect and safeguard children/young persons in employment and entertainment.
A child can work from the age of 13 year and above, the most common employment is the newspaper delivery.
Child Performances licences are issued to children/young people who perform in non broadcast and broadcast programmes, even if there is no payment or time taken off school. Chaperones act as loca parentis to children who take part in these performances, individuals who look after children would need to apply for a chaperone licence, parents are allowed to chaperone their own child.
It provides children/young people with confidence and experience of life skills.
I go out to Bedford Borough Schools to present Child Employment in school assemblies covering both Child Employment and Child Performance legislations. Young people can approach me after the presentation.
On receipt of applications, I process and send them to the employers/producers.
However the young person and their families can enquire by ringing/emailing or writing to me.
The Government has placed a duty on the local authorities Section 436A of the Education Act 1996 (Education and Inspections Act 2006) to make arrangements to establish (so far as it is possible to do so) the identities of children in their area who are of compulsory school age and not receiving a suitable education. This duty is supported from Revised Statutory Guidance - January 2009.
The purpose of the Child Missing Education (CME) Procedures (2009) is to establish a set of principles which all agencies can subscribe to and is underpinned by Bedford's Children and Young People's Plan, to ensure that Bedford Borough Council (BBC)
1) Is able to fulfil its statutory duty to provide an education for all children of compulsory school age.
2) Is able to locate, assess, monitor and track children and young people missing from education in order for them to reach their full potential.
3) Identifies those at risk of becoming missing from education and accordingly allocates appropriate staff to intervene.
4) Maintains contact with those missing from education and those at risk of becoming so.
5) Is able to produce, monitor and evaluate data on CME for Elected Members and Senior Officers in Children's Service.
6) Ensure their responsibility is to be carried out through a strategic and multi-agency framework where all agencies share information on the identification of children and young people missing education.

The Early Years Support Team is a small team of Specialist Advisory Teachers and Specialist Nursery Nurses who offer an Initial Assessment, educational advice and support in relation to children from birth to five who have special educational needs. We are a term-time educational service provided by Bedford Borough Council free of charge.
The Education Welfare Service supports parents and schools in ensuring all children have acceptable levels of school attendance in Bedford Borough. The Education Welfare Service has a legal responsibility to monitor school attendance and consider court action against parents whose children do not attend school regularly. We also have responsibilities to do with protecting children from abuse and danger, protecting children in employment and icensing children in entertainment, modelling and sport.
The Psychology Team, within Bedford Borough Council, work to promote the learning and development of children within the Borough.
Educational Psychologists (EP) offer consultation, advice, assessment and training on how our early year’s settings/schools and parents/carers might help children to learn effectively, and to make the most of their education.
We work with:
• Groups and individual staff in educational settings to develop ways of working with children as individuals and in groups
• Educational settings to provide guidance on managing whole school issues, such as reducing bullying, improving playground behaviour and teaching children to read
• Individual children and/or their parents/carers
• Other professionals from health authorities, social services and voluntary organisations
• Pre-school providers, parents and carers for children under school age.

• Free Drop-in service for all settings and parents/carers, within Bedford Borough
• Research and project work to promote inclusion and support school improvement
• Awareness raising and training for professional staff and voluntary groups about using psychology in education.
• Direct work with individuals and groups of children
• Advice and support in response to critical incidents in the community.
• Advice and support for strategic planning & policy development within the Borough Council
The Elective Home Education Officer offers advice and support to families who are considering home educating their children or to families in Bedford Borough who already home educate to ensure that the children are receiving an education suitable for their age, aptitude and ability.
