We offer residential care for young people with autism and challenging behaviour. Alderwood's aim is to provide a service in the least intrusive and most effective manner, minimising the effect of the young person's disabilities and giving them the opportunity to live as normal a life as possible.
The Chestnutsis a six bedded home and each young person has a tailor made care package to suit their needs and abilities.
Meldreth Manor supports children and young people age 6-18 years who have complex learning difficulties and is one of the few schools in the country that is also able to support complex health needs and associated difficulties. These may be as a result of conditions such as cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, degenerative conditions or autism requiring a specialist approach.
Young people may have multiple disabilities, including sensory and physical impairments and benefit from specialist facilities designed to meet their needs. The highly skilled team of teaching, care and clinical staff take a holistic approach that considers physical, emotional, social, sensory and educational needs within a waking day curriculum.
The support provided enables each young person to engage and progress at their own level within a living and learning environment that is all about enriching individual lives and helping everyone to achieve their full potential as they reach adulthood.

Autism Bedfordshire is a charity that provides services to individuals with autism, their families, carers and professionals across Bedfordshire. Our key purpose is to provide emotional and practical support as well as information, advice, guidance and advocacy.
The outcomes our services deliver (as evidenced by our monitoring and evaluation) are:
1. Individuals with autism and their families will feel less isolated.
2. Individuals with autism will develop confidence, self-esteem, communication, social and life skills.
3. Parents will feel less stressed and better able to cope.
4. Parents will improve their knowledge about autism and the services available.
Autism is a lifelong disability so our membership reflects this as we support both children and adults. We run countywide services for our members including:
- family support groups (L.O.A.F. - Loads of Autistic Fun)
- youth groups (Wanted Fun)
- summer activity schemes
- extended services (e.g. trampolining, golf and swim sessions)
- skills training courses for adults with autism
- social groups for adults with autism
- parent training
- autism awareness training for professions (levels 1, 2 and 3)
- a helpline service (01234 350704) with trained and experienced team members on hand to answer calls (anything from services enquiries to crisis calls).
Autism Bedfordshire’s members can access books and other resources from our library and will receive our bi-monthly newsletter giving details about our services and other groups and activities that may be of interest. We also communicate information to members and our staff through e-newsletters. We have a website that anyone can access and we are on Facebook and Twitter.

Provides welfare benefits advice for people referred through Social Services.
The service aims to support young people into adulthood through a specialist curriculum within a mainstream setting. Students undertaking courses within the Foundation area have the opportunity to develop their independent living skills within our specialist flat; access the community via our excellent location within Bedford town centre; continue to develop their numeracy and literacy skills across the curriculum. Full time programmes consist of opportunities for students to:
• Develop their work skills by undertaking a weekly supported work placement and dedicated session to support their understanding of the world of work.
• The opportunity to undertake one or more option/s which meet their personal interest and/or career aspirations. These are delivered within specialist facilities by vocational staff with experience of working with young people with additional needs.
• All students will have a dedicated Personal Tutor who works with the student and liaises with parents/carers and other agencies to promote achievement and well-being.
The days and times of our services are unfortunately limited by government funding. Full time programmes for young people aged 16-18 are delivered over 4 days for 32 weeks of the year. Full time programmes for young people aged 19+ over 5 days per week between 10.30-3.00. Students access supported for full time programmes for up to 3 years.
Progression routes for young people from our supported courses are varied with students progressing onto level one or two courses cross college, gaining employment to undertaking a varied programme supported through social care which may include one day a week at college and continuation of their work placement. Student’s progress is regularly reviewed and discussed with the student, parent/carers and relevant agencies to support young people to support transition into adulthood.
To provide a summer holiday playscheme for children with a learning disability age between 4-18yrs.
The child needs to have a statement of Special Educational Needs.
The scheme promotes holiday fun in a relaxed atmosphere, with up to 60 children in attendance every day. Activities range from swimming, sports, art, yoga, animal visits, magic shows, flower arranging, tennis, art, cooking and gymnastics.
We are open for 15 days, lots of qualified and experienced staff, with the addition of volunteers (young people) to support the children.
We can offer support for a range of needs. For children who may find a busy environment difficult, we would need to plan carefully and ensure our service can offer the right support.
The key purpose for our service is to clinically assess and provide appropriate wheelchairs and associated equipment (posture and pressure care) to clients with a long-term mobility need, (over 6 months). The Wheelchair Service will continue to support the clients and maintain any issued equipment. Having the most appropriate mobility equipment can improve quality of life, facilitate independence, enable access into the wider community and reduce the risk of developing deformity for our clients.
The wheelchair service provides training for the community prescribers of basic wheelchairs for adult clients that are not totally wheelchair dependant. We offer specialist assessment for adult clients that are totally wheelchair dependent, all children and bariatric clients. We run a bespoke seating service for clients with complex postural needs that require made to measure / moulded seating. We are able to pressure map as part of a specialist pressure care assessment and provide a range of complex cushions. We work closely with seating companies and hold regular clinics for equipment trail or review.
Each new episode of care is completed within 18 weeks of referral and this is normally sufficient for most clients, however if something takes longer to resolve we would continue to work with the client until the clinical situation required. We accept referrals for review throughout the time the client has the equipment, and have an approved repairer contract to ensure that the wheelchairs are properly maintained while it is on issue.
We currently review all bespoke seating clients annually. We would like to offer a review service for all children and powered wheelchair users but we are currently not commissioned to do this.
We support people over 18 years of age in their own homes and in our supported living services. We provide support with personal care, skills building, budgeting, social inclusion and development of all daily living skills assisting young people to live their chosen lifestyle and reach their maximum potential.
