Our purpose is
'to help transform and improve the lives of young people who are struggling, or have struggled in life so far, whether it be academically, socially or economically. We aim to promote a sense of well being and purpose, so they feel they are better equipped to progress, move on and start to lead a fulfilling life.'
In school holiday time we run more 'fun'skills and techniques based activity sessions. Most of these are open to all young people. However, in the past we have also worked with Beds Cerebral Palsy Society, Taylor House, YMCA etc. (With activities ranging from purely fun / interest sessions to courses with small qualifications.)
The activities we run include Angling (Fishing! and bait / tackle making); Photography; Estate Maintenance / Construction sessions (Building and installing platforms and gates, creating and maintaining paths and steps, cutting back, clearing and strimming trees, bushes and vegetation etc); Forestry / Survival skills; Indoor / Outdoor cooking; Mountain Bike riding and maintenance; other sports related activities; Arts and Crafts; Pond dipping; Bird / Animal watching and related walks; Gardening on our allotment, Work experience opportunities; taking young people to Zoo's and Safari Parks; as well as working on CV's, writing application letters for jobs and college courses, interview techniques, researching job and college courses.
(We have 6 vehicles including one minibus, which enables some transport capability for wheelchair users.)
We have been able to help a lot of young people whilst we have been operating and in this academic year the vast majority of our young people have come away with at least one or more qualifications.

Bedford College offer programmes of education for young people and adult working from pre-entry to Higher Education in a wide range of academic and vocational areas. The college successfully support young people and adults to progress into Higher Education and work. The college also provide specialist provision for young people within discrete groups, should you be interested in this offer please refer to our section on Supported Learning Courses.
The college offer a range of support for those young people with an identified Learning Difficulty and/or Disability according to individual need. Typical services provided can include:
• 1-1 or small group support outside of the main class where students may develop study skills, English and/or maths to support them to achieve their main qualification.
• Teaching Assistant support within both structured and un-structured times if appropriate.
• Learning Support Assistants to support with physical and personal care needs if required.
• Specialist exam arrangements
Alongside these services we have specialist Autism, Deaf and Dyslexia Co-ordinators.
The Autism Co-ordinator provides specialist support to both students and staff to promote effective support and student achievement to those on the spectrum, this can include mentoring support, staff development and assessment. The Co-ordinator is supported by an Assistant and together they provide daily drop in sessions for students at both our Cauldwell Street and Shuttleworth campuses.
At our Cauldwell Street site we have a dedicated base room called ‘The Haven’ which students can access throughout the day. The specialist team also work with students to plan social activities which have included bowling, ice skating at Christmas, meals out and an arts evening with pizza!
The Deaf Co-ordinator is herself Hard of Hearing and her preferred method of communication is British Sign Language, this provides her with a unique insight that she is able to utilise to meet the needs of students both in terms of mentoring and pairing to a communicator. The Deaf Co-ordinator delivers training to staff in develop their awareness and BSL communication skills. The Deaf Co-ordinator is supported by a team of experienced communicators.
The team also have two Dyslexia Co-ordinators who provide staff awareness training, specialist teaching and exam arrangements.
The focus of the college support team is very much upon supporting students to become as independent as they possibly can within their learning to support their longer term aspirations.
Hear2listen deliver the National Citizen Service (NCS) in Bedfordshire. This opportunity is open to to all 16/17 yr olds and up to 25yr olds with additional needs.

To engage young people in social action in their communities and the democratic process, building their understanding of their responsibilities as citizens.
PHASE 1 - ADVENTURE
A four -day, three-night residential based away from home with fun activities such as canoeing, rock climbing and abseiling. A chance to meet new people and enjoy some adventure, fun and freedom!
PHASE 2 - DISCOVERY
A further 4 days where you'll develop life skills like confidence, leadership and communication to boost your CV or UCAS personal statement.
PHASE 3 - ACTION
Working in teams, you'll put your new skills into practice by delivering a community project of your choice. Plan, fundraise, make a difference!
You and your mates will get together to celebrate your achievements. NCS opens up a world of opportunities, giving you exclusive access to work placements, volunteering and events.

Preparing for Adulthood - Transition (means “change”)
It is what happens when you start thinking about what you want to do when you leave school and what support you may need.
It is a time to look at what you want in life, and plan the services you may need to support you. Planning your transition starts happening when you are about 13 years old. A good transition means that you will be as independent as possible when you are an adult. It is important that you know about what will happen and how all of the different changes will affect you.
Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. Until then, we’ll be here. We provide support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year. We raise awareness of the issues that matter. And with your support, we'll keep driving change across society until this country is great for everyone.
Success Hides In New Employment Ltd is an organisation that supports young people and adults on the Autistic Spectrum as well as other learning disabilities, to find work placements that match their desires and enables them to show their abilities to a wide range of employers.
WHAT WE DO:
- Liase with all candidates to discover their dreams, aspirations and skills to enable our team to source the most suitable work placement.
- Support with writing a C.V.
- Full support whilst on work placement.
- Support with Access to Work application (once in paid employment).
- Work with employers to secure permenant employment after a successful work placement.
- Continue to support the candidate once employed for the duration of their probabtion period.
We work closely with companies, colleges, schools and families in Bedford and the surrounding areas.
