Our purpose is
'to help transform and improve the lives of young people who are struggling, or have struggled in life so far, whether it be academically, socially or economically. We aim to promote a sense of well being and purpose, so they feel they are better equipped to progress, move on and start to lead a fulfilling life.'
In school holiday time we run more 'fun'skills and techniques based activity sessions. Most of these are open to all young people. However, in the past we have also worked with Beds Cerebral Palsy Society, Taylor House, YMCA etc. (With activities ranging from purely fun / interest sessions to courses with small qualifications.)
The activities we run include Angling (Fishing! and bait / tackle making); Photography; Estate Maintenance / Construction sessions (Building and installing platforms and gates, creating and maintaining paths and steps, cutting back, clearing and strimming trees, bushes and vegetation etc); Forestry / Survival skills; Indoor / Outdoor cooking; Mountain Bike riding and maintenance; other sports related activities; Arts and Crafts; Pond dipping; Bird / Animal watching and related walks; Gardening on our allotment, Work experience opportunities; taking young people to Zoo's and Safari Parks; as well as working on CV's, writing application letters for jobs and college courses, interview techniques, researching job and college courses.
(We have 6 vehicles including one minibus, which enables some transport capability for wheelchair users.)
We have been able to help a lot of young people whilst we have been operating and in this academic year the vast majority of our young people have come away with at least one or more qualifications.
The service aims to support young people into adulthood through a specialist curriculum within a mainstream setting. Students undertaking courses within the Foundation area have the opportunity to develop their independent living skills within our specialist flat; access the community via our excellent location within Bedford town centre; continue to develop their numeracy and literacy skills across the curriculum. Full time programmes consist of opportunities for students to:
• Develop their work skills by undertaking a weekly supported work placement and dedicated session to support their understanding of the world of work.
• The opportunity to undertake one or more option/s which meet their personal interest and/or career aspirations. These are delivered within specialist facilities by vocational staff with experience of working with young people with additional needs.
• All students will have a dedicated Personal Tutor who works with the student and liaises with parents/carers and other agencies to promote achievement and well-being.
The days and times of our services are unfortunately limited by government funding. Full time programmes for young people aged 16-18 are delivered over 4 days for 32 weeks of the year. Full time programmes for young people aged 19+ over 5 days per week between 10.30-3.00. Students access supported for full time programmes for up to 3 years.
Progression routes for young people from our supported courses are varied with students progressing onto level one or two courses cross college, gaining employment to undertaking a varied programme supported through social care which may include one day a week at college and continuation of their work placement. Student’s progress is regularly reviewed and discussed with the student, parent/carers and relevant agencies to support young people to support transition into adulthood.
First Place Training is a unique training provider because we aim to cater for each individual's needs within a nurturing and dynamic environment. The core of our business is aimed at getting young people back into education and employment. We recognise that not every student will have the same requirements, ambitions or indeed problems and what we are really are trying to do here is make a difference to their lives. We try to offer appropriate opportunities to those who may not have attained highest prior achievements.

Many learners with learning difficulties or disabilities will be working towards supported employment or independent living, but others will be heading for other destinations such as Traineeship or an Apprenticeship. A carefully managed programme with support is put in place to enable them to progress successfully.
Hear2listen deliver the National Citizen Service (NCS) in Bedfordshire. This opportunity is open to to all 16/17 yr olds and up to 25yr olds with additional needs.

PHASE 1 - ADVENTURE
A four -day, three-night residential based away from home with fun activities such as canoeing, rock climbing and abseiling. A chance to meet new people and enjoy some adventure, fun and freedom!
PHASE 2 - DISCOVERY
A further 4 days where you'll develop life skills like confidence, leadership and communication to boost your CV or UCAS personal statement.
PHASE 3 - ACTION
Working in teams, you'll put your new skills into practice by delivering a community project of your choice. Plan, fundraise, make a difference!
You and your mates will get together to celebrate your achievements. NCS opens up a world of opportunities, giving you exclusive access to work placements, volunteering and events.

Preparing for Adulthood - Transition (means “change”)
It is what happens when you start thinking about what you want to do when you leave school and what support you may need.
It is a time to look at what you want in life, and plan the services you may need to support you. Planning your transition starts happening when you are about 13 years old. A good transition means that you will be as independent as possible when you are an adult. It is important that you know about what will happen and how all of the different changes will affect you.
Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. Until then, we’ll be here. We provide support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year. We raise awareness of the issues that matter. And with your support, we'll keep driving change across society until this country is great for everyone.
Youth Inspired is a specialist education provider for adults and young people aged 16+ who have learning difficulties. Our core programme is called Improving Choices; a full time course designed for learners leaving school, or recently left school, who are not able to access college or employment opportunities. Applicants must be aged 16 - 25. The course runs for up to three years, depending on funding being approved by the Local Authority, and the programme is built around the needs of the learner. We offer a range of subjects including; English, Maths and ICT as well as social skills, personal development, independent living skills and vocational subjects. Subject are accredited through Gateway Qualifications, (formally OCN Eastern region), and BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT) offering nationally recognised qualifications. Referrals to this course come through from the Bedford Borough SEND team.
Subject to funding availability we also offer adult community learning courses in a range of subjects. They are designed for adults with a learning difficulty or mental health condition or other barrier to learning such as ASD. These are short courses lasting 8 - 12 weeks. Professionals are able to refer people aged 19+ or learners can refer themselves. The subjects offered are agreed annually. These courses are free at point of access for learners. These courses are also accredited through Gateway Qualifications.
