Ravensden Lower Pre-school is based at Ravensden Lower Church of England School sharing leadership, values and ethos with the school. It offers a very good education, care and nurture for all children aged from 2 to 4+ year olds. The setting thrives under the excellent guidance of a dedicated, creative and inspirational staff under the leadership of the Pre-school Leader & SENDCO, Mrs Meikle.
Children well-looked after in our inclusive Pre-school where we celebrate the fact that each and every child is unique and that every child is different. Children with SEND are assessed by Pre-school staff on entry through first meeting with parent(s) and their child at home; then observing and listening to the child on their visits to the setting and enquiring about the child’s developmental journey from birth.
The Pre-school staff with support from Mrs North the Headteacher, who is also the school’s SENDCO, as well as Bedford Borough’s Early Years SEND Team ensure that we meet each child’s individual needs. We offer 1:1 care for those with an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) and will liaise frequently with parents, all other agencies so that our provision meets a child’s needs. We will carry out programmes of therapy: e.g. Physiotherapy; Speech and language under the direction of the specialist agencies.
The new purpose built Pre-school has disabled toilet facilities; is fully accessible to all children being on a level site with its own garden, large canopy (with artificial grass for wet days), a flat tarmac area for bikes, as well as a huge school field with hedgerows and wooded copse. We are well resourced both in and outdoors with plenty of construction, play apparatus, games, toys, books and have access to the school’s facilities too.
Children with SEND will have a named person responsible for their care and education with the appropriate support of trained staff to lead their play. The Pre-school provides a stimulating and creative learning environment both indoors and outdoors following the Early Years curriculum There are very close links between the setting and parents with ‘come and play’ sessions by invitation to groups of parents, open mornings, themed celebrations as well as regular opportunities for parents to consult staff about their child’s needs and progress towards the early learning goals.
The Pre-school and reception class in the main School have frequent joint activities, close links as well as joint training sessions to ensure the children in Pre-School benefit from a wide range of teaching and learning opportunities. It also enables children in Pre-school to transfer to the Lower School with ease as they are very familiar with the Reception classroom and staff as well as the common ‘Values’ ethos.
