Bedford College offer programmes of education for young people and adult working from pre-entry to Higher Education in a wide range of academic and vocational areas. The college successfully support young people and adults to progress into Higher Education and work. The college also provide specialist provision for young people within discrete groups, should you be interested in this offer please refer to our section on Supported Learning Courses.
The college offer a range of support for those young people with an identified Learning Difficulty and/or Disability according to individual need. Typical services provided can include:
• 1-1 or small group support outside of the main class where students may develop study skills, English and/or maths to support them to achieve their main qualification.
• Teaching Assistant support within both structured and un-structured times if appropriate.
• Learning Support Assistants to support with physical and personal care needs if required.
• Specialist exam arrangements
Alongside these services we have specialist Autism, Deaf and Dyslexia Co-ordinators.
The Autism Co-ordinator provides specialist support to both students and staff to promote effective support and student achievement to those on the spectrum, this can include mentoring support, staff development and assessment. The Co-ordinator is supported by an Assistant and together they provide daily drop in sessions for students at both our Cauldwell Street and Shuttleworth campuses.
At our Cauldwell Street site we have a dedicated base room called ‘The Haven’ which students can access throughout the day. The specialist team also work with students to plan social activities which have included bowling, ice skating at Christmas, meals out and an arts evening with pizza!
The Deaf Co-ordinator is herself Hard of Hearing and her preferred method of communication is British Sign Language, this provides her with a unique insight that she is able to utilise to meet the needs of students both in terms of mentoring and pairing to a communicator. The Deaf Co-ordinator delivers training to staff in develop their awareness and BSL communication skills. The Deaf Co-ordinator is supported by a team of experienced communicators.
The team also have two Dyslexia Co-ordinators who provide staff awareness training, specialist teaching and exam arrangements.
The focus of the college support team is very much upon supporting students to become as independent as they possibly can within their learning to support their longer term aspirations.
The service aims to support young people into adulthood through a specialist curriculum within a mainstream setting. Students undertaking courses within the Foundation area have the opportunity to develop their independent living skills within our specialist flat; access the community via our excellent location within Bedford town centre; continue to develop their numeracy and literacy skills across the curriculum. Full time programmes consist of opportunities for students to:
• Develop their work skills by undertaking a weekly supported work placement and dedicated session to support their understanding of the world of work.
• The opportunity to undertake one or more option/s which meet their personal interest and/or career aspirations. These are delivered within specialist facilities by vocational staff with experience of working with young people with additional needs.
• All students will have a dedicated Personal Tutor who works with the student and liaises with parents/carers and other agencies to promote achievement and well-being.
The days and times of our services are unfortunately limited by government funding. Full time programmes for young people aged 16-18 are delivered over 4 days for 32 weeks of the year. Full time programmes for young people aged 19+ over 5 days per week between 10.30-3.00. Students access supported for full time programmes for up to 3 years.
Progression routes for young people from our supported courses are varied with students progressing onto level one or two courses cross college, gaining employment to undertaking a varied programme supported through social care which may include one day a week at college and continuation of their work placement. Student’s progress is regularly reviewed and discussed with the student, parent/carers and relevant agencies to support young people to support transition into adulthood.
To provide outstanding education and training opportunities in land based, construction and sports studies, for everyone who will benefit from them.
We believe everyone has the right to education, so we take a high-quality school environment and deliver it via the internet. Nisai is the only online provider in the UK to have a full Ofsted inspection, achieving a grading of ‘Good’. We provide live online classes taught by qualified subject-specific teachers across the country for students studying Key Stage 3, 4 or 5. Our goal is to ensure that every student can complete their education and gain accredited academic and vocational qualifications such as Functional Skills, GCSEs and A Levels.
North Hertfordshire College provides specialist courses for young people aged 16-25 with learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD) within the Supported Studies department. It is a very well-established and high performing department with a range of entry level courses offered to students with moderate and severe learning difficulties.
The aim is to provide opportunities for students to develop their independent living and employability skills, to gain self-confidence, to access the local community and to develop friendships in order to fully prepare them for adulthood. Close working relationships with local employers and other providers ensure that young people are provided with a rich curriculum which includes work-based learning as part of work experience or whilst on a supported internship or working for a number of college enterprise initiatives.
North Hertfordshire College is unique in offering supported housing at Briar Patch in Letchworth which is run in partnership with Genesis Housing. Students aged 18 – 25 learn independent living skills in their home at Briar Patch whilst attending a college course and can live there for between 1- 4 years before progressing to alternative and less supported housing provision within the local area or other parts of Hertfordshire.

Ofsted has endorsed the achievement of Northampton College’s highest ever success rates recording a judgement of ‘Good’ for overall effectiveness as an outcome of its latest inspection in February 2013.
Northampton College has become one of the larger general Further Education Colleges in the region, with approximately 7,000 students, a turnover of over £25 million, nearly 600 permanent members of staff and another 300 working on a flexible basis. It offers a broad range of full-time and part-time courses, many funded by the Education Funding Agency (EFA) and the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). In addition, it provides Higher Education courses in conjunction with The University of Northampton, and provides support for a range of other organisations including the voluntary sector.
The College has completed a £75m three-year re-building programme at its main site at Booth Lane in Northampton, marked by an official opening ceremony in March 2012 presided over by HRH The Duke of York.
The College's largest site at Booth Lane now benefits from a brand new, state of the art building of 27,000m providing a high quality, modern design fit to educate and skill the County's students in the 21st century. The design of the building provides outstanding physical access for all users to all levels with disabled personal care facilities on every floor.
The College also has a base in the town centre of Northampton at Lower Mounts. This facility, extended in 2010, represents a significant investment in Northampton. It is an iconic building which contributes to the ambition of the town to re-develop itself and build on its strengths in the 21st century.
Extending in this way has enabled the College to improve its offer, including state of the art facilities for hairdressing and beauty therapy, an extended library, and enhanced information, advice and guidance services. Teaching and learning at Lower Mounts has been expanded to include business, languages, health care and Access to Higher Education.
In addition, the College has a substantial site in Daventry from which it delivers a range of full time and part time provision. The College has recently secured funding to re-develop its provision in Daventry and will be developing a purpose built campus in the Learning Quarter of the town with the new provision opening in 2016. The new build will also meet all DDA requirements for access.
The College recruits from across the county and also has a significant number of “out of county” students, with students from Bedfordshire; Leicestershire; Warwickshire and Milton Keynes all attending the College.
Northampton College's locally-delivered provision supports more than 4,000 full-time students, most of whom are aged 16-19, in programmes covering most curriculum areas. It has also extended its link provision with schools.
Sarah is a qualified special needs teacher and for the last five years has been studying Animal Assisted Therapy. The Society for Companion Animal Studies explains that Animal Assisted Therapy is facilitated by health service professionals; such as therapists, teachers and nurses. AAT is goal-directed. There are a range of focus areas that can be developed with the use of AAT including, physical, social, emotional and mental health. Animal assisted therapists formally plan and monitor sessions. Goals are discussed with key professionals and/or parents (these can be linked to EHCPlans) and individual plans are designed. Detailed feedback is provided. These sessions last an hour and usually range from 6-12 sessions, depending on the client’s needs.
Sarah has taken part in rigorous training, by a leader in the field, Dr Risë VanFleet and is now a Certified Professional Practitioner in Animal Assisted Play Therapy™, one of few in the UK.
Success Hides In New Employment Ltd is an organisation that supports young people and adults on the Autistic Spectrum as well as other learning disabilities, to find work placements that match their desires and enables them to show their abilities to a wide range of employers.
WHAT WE DO:
- Liase with all candidates to discover their dreams, aspirations and skills to enable our team to source the most suitable work placement.
- Support with writing a C.V.
- Full support whilst on work placement.
- Support with Access to Work application (once in paid employment).
- Work with employers to secure permenant employment after a successful work placement.
- Continue to support the candidate once employed for the duration of their probabtion period.
We work closely with companies, colleges, schools and families in Bedford and the surrounding areas.
At the RNC we are experts in visual impairment, supporting our students and trainees to maintain their own independence. We also offer our services out to individuals and organisations (including schools, colleges, councils, charities and private companies)
RNC is proud to offer a range of courses at various levels to both students (16 to 25 year olds) and adult trainees (18 to 65 year olds).
